"From a Missed Spike to Forever"

It was the day of the Accountancy intramurals tryouts, and the court was buzzing with excitement. Students from all year levels gathered, eager to prove themselves and earn a spot on the team. Among them were two volleyball enthusiasts who hadn’t met before—JJ and Quenie—but that day would mark the beginning of something far greater than either of them expected.

During a drill involving dig and spike passes, Quenie set the ball to JJ, but he hesitated and missed the spike. Frustrated, Quenie blurted out, “Ang arte naman nito sa set, kaloka!” She laughed, but no one knew that this playful moment would be the spark that would change their lives forever.

As training continued, JJ developed a secret crush on Quenie. Shy and unsure of how to approach her, he kept his feelings to himself—until an opportunity came. One day, Quenie had an issue with her jersey refund, and JJ offered to accompany her. That small gesture opened the door to their growing friendship.

They began exchanging phone numbers and started seeing each other more often in school, especially during sports events. Their conversations grew longer, filled with laughter and shared interests—both passionate about sports, they quickly became close.

Eventually, JJ mustered the courage to confess his feelings. On January 1, 2019 at exactly 12 AM, the very first day of the year, he told Quenie he liked her—but she gently turned him down. JJ was heartbroken, unsure of how to move forward. But he didn’t give up. With quite perseverance and unwavering care, he continued to be there for her.

Quenie, on the other hand, valued their friendship deeply. She wasn't ready for anything more at the time but saw how sincere and consistent JJ was. Because of that, she gave their bond space to grow.

Over time, their connection deepened. They treated each other as best friends. JJ began introducing Quenie to his faith, inviting her to church and sharing his beliefs. Eventually, Quenie admitted that her feelings for JJ had started to change. Still, she asked him to wait—until graduation—if he truly believed she was the one.

And voila, he did!

JJ patiently stood by her side for nearly five long years. Guided by faith, love, and hope, his patience was rewarded when Quenie finally said the word he had longed to hear: “YES.”

From that moment on, their journey together flourished. They explored life hand-in-hand, traveling on motorcycles, finding joy in nature, and dreaming about the life they would build. Their love grew stronger with every adventure.

Then, in December 2024, surrounded by the support of their friends and families, JJ finally asked the question that had been in his heart for years. In front of their loved ones, he knelt and said, “Will you marry me?”

With tears of joy, Quenie said “Yes,” knowing deep in her heart that JJ was the one God had sent to love, care for, and protect her for a lifetime.

As they began preparing for their dream wedding, they looked back and smiled—amazed that a single volleyball tryout was all it took to lead them to a forever they never saw coming.
